The US EPA launched the SmartWay designation to highlight the cleanest, most efficient vehicles for each model year. All vehicles listed in EPA's Green Vehicle Guide receive an Air Pollution Score and a Greenhouse Gas Score, on a scale of 1-10. The SmartWay designation is earned by those vehicles that have combined Air Pollution and Greenhouse Gas Scores that place them in the top tier (approximately the top 20%) of environmental performers. epa.gov
