But antibacterials are bad for you and the environment!

Full disclosure: I have not used this product. But I am wondering how an antibacterial product rated this high for health & environmental impact when the America Medical Association released a report in 2000 which stated that bacteria are developing resistance to the antimicrobials which are increasingly being added to consumer products like this, and that the use of these products may lead to antibiotic resistance. The report stated: ‘Ultimately, antibiotic resistance is a major public health concern that has to be controlled…’ ‘The use of common antimicrobials…in consumer products should be discontinued…’ All the bacteria that survive antibacterials become the foundations of new, improved, bacterial Superraces. Ironically, research has shown that regular hand soap and liquid dish soap are just as effective at killing bacteria as antibacterial soaps are. It is not just their salutary effect on dangerous bacteria that makes antibacterials hazardous: In 2002, the U.S. Geological Survey published a study of chemicals detected in our nation’s surface waters. Triclosan, the most commonly used antibacterial, was found in 58% of the water bodies tested. University of Minnesota decided to examine what happened to triclosan once it entered the natural environment and discovered that triclosan degraded into a form of dioxin. (Dioxins are one of the so-called “Dirty Dozen” of the most dangerous synthetic chemicals, banned by the Stockholm Treaty, made legally binding in 2004, and signed by 151 nations including the US.)
