Household Chemical Information
The Household Chemicals category includes a range of products, primarily focused on cleaning agents used in the home. These products contain a few general classes of chemicals: surfactants (the chemicals that pull away the dirt), solvents (sometimes for dirt removal, sometimes for chemical delivery), dyes, fragrances, brighteners, preservatives, and a host of other inert ingredients.Unfortunately, there is no current regulatory requirement that companies disclose full ingredients lists, so very few companies currently do, opting instead to meet the most minimum disclosure requirements, and informing their customers of only one or two “active” ingredients in their products. This gap in public disclosure makes it extremely difficult to evaluate the full health and environmental impacts of household chemical products. GoodGuide is working with a range of actors — including leading firms — to promote fuller disclosure of ingredients so that the public can know the real impacts and performance of household chemical products.
