Misleading PETA Assessment
Although Burt's Bees itself does not engage in animal testing, its parent company, Clorox, does. Since your $$$ is essentially going to Clorox, I don't really recommend this company. There are so many others that don't test on animals. I really wish the GoodGuide would include animal testing in its general rating of products, as they are so thorough in examining every other aspect of a corporation.

Unfortunate Results
This product leaves a yellow film on my child's skin. If you try to rub it in, it actually starts to turn into a type of paste. Too bad.
It makes no sense to boycott a healthy product because you hate the parent company. Why on earth would Clorox ever reduce production on chemical laced products and increase production of green products if people won't support their efforts to put healthy safe products out there? Show them that we want these products and will pay for them. They are a business, show them the money. Boycott their bad products, purchase their good products, and little by little, you'll see the changes you want.Posted by russellmom -
Burt's Bees Products are not all bad!
I was surprised to see such negative reviews for Burt's Bees. Since I have Lupus I have to be very careful about what I use on my skin because it is very sensitive. Unlike a lot of products which generally irritate my skin, I have had very good success with the full line of Burt's Bees products, including the sun screen. Although I love animals and volunteer for several animal organizations, I am not always given a choice about what products I can use if they make me ill. I try as much as I can to purchase "animal friendly" products, but the ones that actually WORK and DO NOT make me ill is very limited, so I appreciate that Burt's Bees makes a product that helps me.

Not much Good
I tried using this both plowing and canoeing. The sticky white film it produces comes in handy if you want to use dust as secondary protection. Right. I noticed after I came back from a 4 hour canoe session, that my skin was a bright red underneath the white film. It's the worst sunscreen I've ever used. As far as Clorox goes, they seem to be trying. I use their Greenworks products and they work quite well. I love the sort of elite mind set that runs around using obscure niche products; not that Burt's Bee's was a niche company. Their profit the other year was $164 Million according to Grist. I'd rather buy from, and encourage, the larger companies by making it obvious that they can make money(oh horrors) going green. Clorox isn't the only one going that direction, and they will get my dollars.

EcoMomShopGirl likes everything about this except using it.
I was so excited to learn about Burt's Bees sunscreen especially after it fared so well on the EWG best sunscreen list. I was thrilled to find such a high caliber sunscreen product available with the drugstore convenience and especially the price point. I am firmly committed to the products I choose to use on myself and my family in that they be EcoMom approved in every applicable realm. This product was great on paper - GREAT. The only bad news is that it is is impossible to use. I will go to great lengths often exchanging ease of use for the greater cause of healthy products but this was just too hard. It was so difficult to use that there was a three generation family revolt about putting it on the third day. The biggest complaints were the spackle like consistency that was next to impossible to apply to skin and the the unpleasant odor.
I applaud Burts Bees (even under the new ownership) because they bring ecologically sound products to the market place at a price point that is competitive with the big cosmetic giants ultimately contributing meaningful change in the billion dollar personal care consumer product industry. I am optimistic that they will relaunch the sunscreen with vast usability improvement.Posted by EcoMomShopGirl
